Cybercelebration

Fernando Trevino wanted his mother to share the joy of his oldest daughter's quinceañera celebration last fall.

But making the trip from her home in Coahuila, Mexico, was impossible. So Trevino turned to cyberspace.

He created a site called www.quinceaera.us and posted photos from Rosa's quinceañera celebration last September.

In doing so, he created a bridge between a centuries-old tradition and the high-tech world.

The Web site allows family members in Texas and Mexico to be part of the celebration if they can't travel to Washington, Trevino said. The Web site is also the proud father's way to honor his four daughters -- Rosa, Sahlly, Sheira and Shirley -- and the celebration of their 15th birthdays.

Trevino is now preparing to post photos of 15-year-old Sahlly's fiesta. She turned 15 on March 7, but her quinceañera was Saturday at St. Patrick's Church in Pasco.

With three girls celebrating the coming-of-age ceremony one right after the other, and with his youngest daughter, 9-year-old Shirley, celebrating her quinceañera in six years, the Web site won't be going away any time soon.

Sahlly said she admits it "feels weird" having strangers looking at the photos, but she doesn't want to hurt her father's feelings.

"It's his idea. He enjoys doing that Web site thing," she said.

When it came to putting up older sister Rosa's photos on the site, Sahlly was excited.

But now that the time is nearing for her own photos to go up, she said, "It does feel kind of embarrassing to know you are the star of a Web site. But I don't really mind as long as the photos are pretty."

And 14-year-old Sheira, who will have her quinceañera early next year, echoed Sahlly's sentiments.

"I don't want to (have my photos posted)," she said.

When asked if there was any way to talk their dad out of posting photos on the site, Sahlly laughed, "Oh, you can't do that."

The site is not just for displaying his own daughters' special day. Any young lady can post photos or a description of her own quinceañera on the site for free, which several people have done.

The list includes quinceañeras from across the country and from across the world, including Puerto Rico and Mexico.

One posting lists a young man's 1998 quinceañero celebration in Sonora, Mexico.

Trevino's relatives are always eager to see the photos on the site.

"They are calling the next day to ask if I'm going to post the photos," he said.
